ARTLIA's art prints are produced according to standardized paper and canvas formats.

Depending on the aspect ratio of the original artwork and the chosen format, it may happen that the edges of the image are slightly adjusted to achieve a harmonious overall effect and high print quality.

For canvas prints, the ARTLIA team ensures that the main motif is placed as fully as possible on the front side. The side frame areas are continued in color and style to match the original image.

This is a deliberate and common production step with which the ARTLIA team ensures the aesthetic quality of each artwork.

Cats Under the Willow (유하묘도, 柳下猫圖, Yuha Myodo)

The Korean Folk Painting Minhwa

At first glance, this painting depicts a peaceful scene: two adult cats rest with their three kittens under a willow tree, while a magpie sits on a branch. However, in Korean folk painting (Minhwa), every motif carries a deeper symbolic meaning.

Minhwa refers to Korea’s traditional folk painting. Unlike court painting, which was created for the royal court and aristocracy, Minhwa emerged from the everyday lives of ordinary people. The mostly anonymous artists created their works not merely as decoration, but above all as expressions of wishes for happiness, health, longevity, prosperity, and family harmony. Animals, plants, and other natural motifs served as symbols whose meanings were immediately understood by people of that time.

The painting “Yuha Myodo, 유하묘도” (Cats Under the Willow) is traditionally attributed to the Joseon Dynasty painter Jo Ji-un (조지운, 1637–1691). Since its authorship cannot be established with complete certainty, it is described as “attributed to the painter.” Regardless, the work is considered an outstanding example of the symbolic visual language of Korean folk art.

The two adult cats represent a harmonious married couple and a peaceful family life. The three kittens symbolize the wish for numerous descendants and a thriving family.

In East Asian culture, the cat also holds special significance. The Chinese character for “cat” (猫, 묘) is pronounced similarly to the character 耄, which refers to an advanced age. Because of this wordplay, the cat became a symbol of longevity and a long, healthy life.

The willow represents vitality, renewal, and perseverance. Each spring, it produces new shoots, embodying the eternal cycle of life. In Korea, the magpie is still regarded as a bird of good fortune and a bearer of good news and joyful events.

Together, these pictorial motifs convey a blessing: a long life, family harmony, many descendants, as well as happiness and prosperity.

Korean folk painting invites viewers to look beyond what is visible. Behind seemingly everyday depictions of animals and plants lie the hopes, wishes, and values of the people who created these images and preserved them across generations. Thus, “Cats Under the Willow” tells not only of a cat family, but also of the timeless longing for a happy and fulfilling life.
