ARTLIA's art prints are produced according to standardized paper and canvas formats.

Depending on the aspect ratio of the original artwork and the chosen format, it may happen that the edges of the image are slightly adjusted to achieve a harmonious overall effect and high print quality.

For canvas prints, the ARTLIA team ensures that the main motif is placed as fully as possible on the front side. The side frame areas are continued in color and style to match the original image.

This is a deliberate and common production step with which the ARTLIA team ensures the aesthetic quality of each artwork.

The Angelus (The Angelus Ringing) – Jean-François Millet

Creation: 1857–1859
Technique: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: approx. 55.5 × 66 cm
Location: Musée d'Orsay

Depiction and Atmosphere

With The Angelus, Millet created one of the most moving pictures of French realism. On a harvested field, a man and a woman stand side by side. Their work tools – a wheelbarrow and a basket of potatoes – point to the just-finished workday. In the distance, the tower of a church rises, barely more than a silhouette in the evening light.

The couple has paused. Both bow their heads in prayer as the Angelus ringing sounds from the village. The scene is marked by quiet dignity. Nothing dramatic happens – and precisely in this lies its effect. The calm of the moment conveys composure, modesty, and inner focus.

Composition

The composition is clearly structured. Vertical elements – the standing figure of the man, the upright pitchfork, and the distant church tower – divide the space. Opposite stands the wide horizon line of the field. The sky takes up a large part of the area and enhances the impression of vastness and stillness.

Through this simple, balanced arrangement, an almost monumental effect arises, although the painting itself is not large in format.

Color and Light

Millet works with restrained, earth-bound tones. Brown and ochre shades dominate the ground, while the sky is kept in muted blue and gray tones. The evening light softly models the figures and reduces details. They do not appear as individual portraits but as symbols of peasant existence.

The subdued coloring contributes significantly to the contemplative mood.

Meaning and Interpretation

The work combines social reality with a spiritual dimension. It shows not only agricultural work but also its embedding in religious tradition. The pause in prayer gives everyday life a transcendent level.

Salvador Dalí saw hidden psychological tensions in the picture. In the art-historical context, however, it remains above all an expression of realism and appreciation of rural life.

Art-Historical Classification

The Angelus is one of the best-known works of the Barbizon school. Millet elevated simple peasant life to a worthy subject and gave it an almost timeless validity. The combination of everyday scene and quiet spirituality made the painting extraordinarily popular in the late 19th century and secured its firm place in European art history.
