ARTLIA's art prints are produced according to standardized paper and canvas formats.

Depending on the aspect ratio of the original artwork and the chosen format, it may happen that the edges of the image are slightly adjusted to achieve a harmonious overall effect and high print quality.

For canvas prints, the ARTLIA team ensures that the main motif is placed as fully as possible on the front side. The side frame areas are continued in color and style to match the original image.

This is a deliberate and common production step with which the ARTLIA team ensures the aesthetic quality of each artwork.

L’Angelus (The Angelus Bell) – Jean-François Millet

Date of creation: 1857–1859
Technique: Oil on canvas
Original size: approx. 55.5 × 66 cm
Location: Musée d'Orsay

Image description

The Angelus Bell is one of the best-known works of 19th-century French realism. The painting shows a peasant couple in a harvested field at dusk. Between them stand a basket and a wheelbarrow with potatoes. In the distance, the tower of a church rises against the wide sky.

The two figures have interrupted their work. With bowed heads, they remain in prayer – they listen to the Angelus bell, the traditional Catholic prayer said in the morning, at noon, and in the evening. The scene is quiet, focused, and marked by inner devotion.

Composition and Proportion

Millet builds the composition on clear vertical axes:

  • the standing male figure
  • the raised pitchfork
  • the distant church tower

These verticals contrast with the wide horizontal of the field. The low horizon gives the sky great presence – almost half of the picture surface is devoted to it. This creates a calm, atmospheric effect that emphasizes the spiritual.

The original measures about 55,5 × 66 cm, which corresponds to an aspect ratio of approximately 1:1,19 corresponds.

A format of 41 × 51 cm (16″ × 20″) has a ratio of about 1:1.24 and thus comes very close to the original. This size preserves the compositional balance particularly well – especially the ratio between figures and sky as well as the vertical tension structure.

Light and Color

Millet uses a muted, earthy palette:

  • Ochre and brown tones in the ground
  • Gray and blue nuances in the evening sky
  • dark, almost silhouette-like figures

The light of dusk reduces details and emphasizes the plastic effect of the bodies. The figures appear less as individual portraits and more as archetypal figures – representatives of a social class and a rhythm of life.

Symbolism and Interpretation

The painting appears simple but carries multiple layers of meaning:

  1. Religious Humility – Expression of rural piety.
  2. Work and Transience – The harvested field refers to cycle and finiteness.
  3. Silence in Everyday Life – A moment of interruption of physical work through mental focus.

Later artists like Salvador Dalí interpreted the painting psychologically and saw hidden tensions in it. Historically, however, the work stands in the context of realism and the appreciation of rural existence.

Art Historical Significance

The Angelus became a symbolic image of the French rural population and the Barbizon circle. It combines social observation with spiritual seriousness. In the late 19th century, reproductions spread far beyond France, giving the motif international recognition.
