Fantastic Beasts of Fortune and Harmony (Seosudo, 서수도)
Seosudo refers to a painting genre of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) that is dedicated to the depiction of auspicious and mythical animals. It was believed that these beings possessed special spiritual powers. The images served not only a decorative purpose but also acted as symbolic bearers of wishes for good fortune, long life, harmony, and protection.
The depicted animals often appear together with their young and thus stand for family unity and the wish for many offspring. Recurring motifs include the Qilin, a giraffe-like mythical creature symbolizing peaceful and just order, as well as the Haetae, believed to have the ability to distinguish right from wrong and to ward off misfortune, especially fire. The animal depictions are complemented by lucky fruits such as the peach, symbolizing long life, and the Buddha’s hand citron as a symbol of blessing and prosperity.
Popular both at the royal court and in everyday life among the people, Seosudo reflects the collective hopes of the people of the Joseon era. In the form of fantastic beasts, ideas of a harmonious, peaceful, and happy life are condensed.
